Concentrated feeds
We all know this as they are common in pig farming, these are the feeds we buy from vendors and are in powder form. They are concentrated in nutrients: Vitamins, carbohydrates and proteins and so help to boost the animal's growth. These feeds are relatively expensive so its good practice to pick them up according to the nutrition requirements of your pigs. We will look at that in a later article. When buying this feeds it's very important to check expiry dates to ensure you get value for your money.

Food scraps from household
To maximize profits you can feed your pigs with some of your home food scraps or from known restaurants. However, this should be done with caution as your pigs could get a lot of worms if handling and transportation hygiene is not met. It is advisable to boil the food first to kill bacteria before serving.

Legumes and fruits
The requirement of nutrients to a pig varies with age and size. piglets need more carbohydrates to help them grow while slaughter size pigs need more protein to reduce fat coat and build more muscle.
Introducing serials like beans that have a high protein reduces the number of concentrated feeds costs while maintaining high nutrition to the animal. Piglets can also be fed on legumes but keeping carbohydrates level high. Fruits can be feed to all pigs of all ages in fact they love to snack on them.

Hydroponic feeds
Fresh sprouts grown, offer nutritional advantages for swine. Pigs perform very well when eating fresh, green sprouts. Hydrophonic fodder allows a farmer to supply appropriate volumes of fresh, spring grass shoots to their pigs for optimal performance. The structure is a one time expense. Barley for fodder can be quite expensive so it's better to buy it and stock up when the rainy sessions start or plant some if you can.

It's at the discretion of the farmer to use the above feeds as he sees fit for his animals.
